The Blessing I Never Asked For: My Journey Into Emceeing

Some of the best things that happen to us are the ones we never planned for.

I never set out to become an emcee. It wasn't on my vision board, wasn't a goal I'd written down, wasn't something I'd pursued. And yet, looking back now, I can only call it what it truly was a blessing from the universe, handed to me without me ever having to ask.

When a true leader sees something in you before you see it yourself

Dr. Ben, the founder of MAPAN, is the one who gave me that opportunity trusting me to take on the role of Head Emcee for the MAPAN Summit 2026. He never waited for me to ask. He simply saw something, and handed me the platform to prove it to myself.

That, I've come to believe, is what a true leader does. Real leadership isn't about holding opportunity close and making people compete for it. It's about recognizing potential in someone before they've recognized it in themselves, and having the generosity to hand it over fully, without conditions, without being asked. That single act of trust is where my journey as an emcee began.

Learning from the best

I was fortunate to learn from a true professional Mr. Fadly from UKM whose command of the craft taught me things I could never have picked up from a manual. The intonation. The precise way we pronounce and greet an audience. How to set the tone of a room from the very first word of the opening to the very last word of the closing.

But beyond the technical skill, the real lesson was something quieter: how to master the floor. How to read a room and adjust in real time the changes, the delays, the unexpected shifts and carry it all with calm professionalism, never letting the audience see the stress or urgency behind the scenes. That composure, I've learned, is the real skill of an emcee. Anyone can read a script. Not everyone can hold a room together when the script goes sideways.

From MAPAN Summit to the Rotary stage

That first opportunity with Dr. Ben opened a door I didn't know existed. From there, my journey as an emcee has continued to grow and most recently, I had the honour of serving as the Official Master of Ceremony for Rotary Club of Hartamas' International Cultural Night 2026.

Every event since MAPAN Summit has been its own classroom. Every room has taught me something new about presence, timing, and grace under pressure.

For everyone still standing at the edge of their comfort zone

I share this journey because I know there are people reading this who are exactly where I once was standing at the edge of something new, doubting whether they belong there, wondering if they're "ready enough" to say yes when an opportunity finally comes.

Here is what I've learned: you don't need to feel ready. You need to be willing. The opportunity that changes everything rarely arrives when you feel fully prepared for it, it arrives when someone trusts you enough to hand it to you, and your only job is to say yes and grow into it.

If you're holding yourself back from a stage, a role, a chance that scares you a little I want you to take that as your sign. Step out. The universe has a way of rewarding the ones who show up, even before they feel ready.
